Volunteering in Frankfurt: How Newcomers Can Find a Suitable Role

Volunteering gives you a concrete way to contribute to your new city. Start with the task you can do reliably, then look for an organisation whose needs match your interests and availability.

Where to find official volunteering opportunities

The City of Frankfurt’s Ehrenamtssuche page directs readers to a Hesse-wide volunteering database. You can narrow opportunities by location and type of activity, then contact the organisation named in the listing.

Search for Frankfurt and a field you care about. Read the actual tasks before deciding: an appealing organisation name does not tell you whether the role involves regular shifts, practical work, administration or direct contact with visitors.

Ask for advice if the listings do not fit

Frankfurt’s official directory also lists the Bürgerinstitut volunteering agency. Its listing provides a route to the agency’s own information and current contact details. Check with the agency about advice and suitable opportunities rather than assuming a particular position is available.

Prepare a short introduction: your interests, languages, relevant experience and the time you can offer. It is fine to say you are still settling into Frankfurt and want a manageable first commitment.

Can you volunteer if you mainly speak English?

Language requirements depend on the role. Ask the organisation directly whether English is sufficient, which tasks require German and whether someone can support you during induction. An international organisation does not automatically mean every volunteer role is English-speaking.

Describe your language skills honestly. A clearly agreed task is better than discovering during a shift that you cannot understand essential instructions. If German is needed, our language-learning guide can help you find the relevant course advice.

Questions to ask before accepting a role

Treat the first conversation as a chance to understand the work and the support around it. Be realistic about your schedule; reliable participation matters more than offering hours you cannot sustain.

  • What will I actually do, and who will guide me at the start?
  • Is this a one-off activity or a regular commitment?
  • What language level, training or checks does the role require?
  • Who should I contact if I cannot attend or need help?
  • What arrangements cover expenses, insurance and ending the commitment?

Start small and build relationships through the work

If the organisation offers an introductory meeting or trial session, use it to understand the setting and ask questions. Afterwards, consider whether the task, journey and schedule fit your life before agreeing to more.

You may get to know people while contributing, but choose a role because the work is worthwhile to you. Respect the organisation’s boundaries and the privacy of the people it serves.

Church community and city volunteering are different next steps

River Church Frankfurt is a local Christian community where you can worship and get to know people as you settle in. If you are interested in helping within church life, speak with the church about its own next steps.

For municipal or other citywide volunteer opportunities, use the official listings above. River does not allocate those placements or speak on behalf of the organisations listed.
