Redeem the Time: Work, Witness and Build While the Door Is Open

Biblical urgency is not frantic activity. It is learning to recognize the opportunities God has given, put first things first and spend life on what carries eternal value.

Urgency without panic

Talk about the end times can easily become a discussion about headlines, predictions or timelines. The New Testament repeatedly pulls believers back to a more practical question: how should we live in the time we have? Ephesians 5:15–16 answers with careful living, wisdom and a command to redeem the time.

That means urgency should make Christians more faithful, not more distracted. A believer can care about the return of Jesus while still showing up for family, work, prayer, church, service and the Great Commission. In fact, expectation of Christ should give those responsibilities greater weight.

Use what has been placed in your hand

The picture behind “occupy till I come” is stewardship. God entrusts people with time, ability, relationships, resources and opportunities. Faithfulness asks what can be done with those things for His purposes rather than waiting for an ideal future moment.

For some, the next step is sharing the Gospel with one person. For another, it is becoming dependable in a ministry team, joining a small group, praying consistently, giving, learning Scripture or helping someone new find community. The scale may vary, but the principle is the same: do not bury what has been entrusted.

Witness is part of the assignment

Acts 1:8 connects the power of the Holy Spirit directly to witness. The church’s mission is not carried by human energy alone. Christians are called to depend on the Spirit and then speak and live as witnesses of Jesus in the places they have been sent.

On October 4, River Church Frankfurt reported eight decisions for Jesus during the Sunday gathering. Numbers are not the whole measure of ministry, but each decision represents a person. The church’s call to witness becomes concrete when the Gospel reaches actual people and invites an actual response.

Build what will outlast the moment

Redeeming the time also means refusing to spend every week only reacting to what feels urgent. The local church builds through repeated acts of faithfulness: people are discipled, children are taught, believers learn to serve, relationships deepen, the Gospel is preached and leaders are developed over time.

This kind of building is rarely accomplished in one dramatic moment. It compounds through consistency. The call to occupy therefore includes both immediate action and long-term faithfulness—doing today’s work while building something that can continue bearing fruit.

Choose a next step

A message about urgency is most useful when it produces a response. Rather than adding another idea to a list, identify one concrete act of obedience: pray, serve, witness, reconcile, give, join community, return to Scripture or help someone else take a step toward Jesus.

River Church Frankfurt’s Next Steps page gathers practical ways to move from attending toward belonging, serving and growing. The goal is not activity for activity’s sake. It is a life increasingly aligned with what God has asked His people to do.
