SERMON NOTES
LOOKING IN THE MIRROR OF GODS WORD- OUR IDENTITY
James 1:22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
* Our identity is based from what God says about us
* Many people are living with a false identity
The Mirror of God’s Word Reveals the Love of God
Scripture:
* 1 John 4:9-10 – "This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins."
* Romans 5:8 – "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
I. The Word of God Is a Reflection of His Love
* Just as a mirror shows us our physical reflection, the Word of God reveals the depth of His love for us.
* Many people struggle with believing they are loved, but when we look into Scripture, we see the undeniable truth of God’s unfailing love.
* The Bible is not just a set of instructions—it is a love letter from God, revealing His heart for His children.
II. The Word Shows Us That God’s Love Is Unconditional
* Unlike the love of the world, which is often conditional, God’s love is unchanging and unwavering.
* The mirror of God’s Word reminds us that:
* We are loved not because of what we do, but because of who we are in Christ.
* His love does not waver based on our performance or failures.
* God’s love is not something we earn, but something we receive.
III. The Word of God Corrects Distorted Views of Love
* Many people struggle with self-worth, feeling unlovable due to past failures, rejection, or broken relationships.
* The world teaches that love must be earned, but God’s Word reflects a different reality: we are already fully loved.
* Jeremiah 31:3 – "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness."
IV. The Word Transforms Us Through Love
* When we regularly look into the mirror of Scripture, it shapes our identity, heals our wounds, and transforms our thinking.
* Romans 12:2 – "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
* The more we meditate on God’s love, the more we begin to live in that love and reflect it to others.
V. Walking in the Reflection of God’s Love
* Once we see God’s love reflected in His Word, we must walk in it daily.
* When we live in the reality of God’s love:
* Fear is removed – "Perfect love casts out fear." (1 John 4:18)
* Confidence is built – "If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31)
* We love others as He loves us – "We love because He first loved us." (1 John 4:19)
* The Mirror of the Word of God Shows Us Our Authority Over the Enemy
Scripture References:
* Luke 10:19 – "Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you."
* Ephesians 6:10-11 – "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes."
Ephesians 1:16-23 (NKJV)
*"I do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all."*
* The Lion Raised by Sheep
* The Bully and the Weak Kid
The Mirror of the Word of God Shows Us Our Purpose
Key Passage: Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
Supporting Passage: Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)
"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."
I. The Word Reveals That We Were Created with Purpose
* Many people search for meaning in life, but our true purpose is found in the Word of God.
* Psalm 139:16 – "Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them."
* Before we were born, God had already written our purpose.
II. The Word Shows Us That Our Purpose Is Found in Christ
* Colossians 1:16 – "All things were created through Him and for Him."
* Our ultimate purpose is to live for the glory of God and fulfill His divine plan.
* Outside of Christ, people struggle with identity, direction, and meaning.
* When we look into the mirror of God’s Word, we see that:
* We are called to bear fruit (John 15:16).
* We are ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20).
* We are chosen for good works (Titus 2:14).
III. The Word Aligns Us with God's Plan
* Romans 12:2 – "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
* As we study the Word, it reshapes our thinking and aligns our lives with God’s will.
* Many miss their purpose because they look at the world’s mirror instead of God’s mirror.
IV. The Word Empowers Us to Walk in Our Purpose
* Knowing our purpose is not enough—we must walk in it.
* James 1:22-25 – "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves... he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it... this one will be blessed in what he does."
* As we continue looking into the mirror of God's Word, we gain confidence to fulfill our calling.
